Hydration vs. Moisture | Related, but not the same
Contrary to what many might believe, these two things have completely different definitions. Hydration relates to water while moisture relates to oil. For instance, someone could have oily, dehydrated skin (which is extremely common in dry, cold climates). What?! As we get dry, especially if we are not using enough moisturizer, our body hyperproduces oil to counteract the dryness being experienced at the surface of the skin. It becomes a vicious cycle when it is not treated.
Drinking more water will improve overall skin physiology; however, drinking water alone has not been shown to help with all skin conditions. A good, consistent skin care routine is paramount in helping your skin maintain its delicate moisture barrier and stay hydrated year-round.
You need both moisture (protective barrier) and hydration (water content within skin) in order to maintain proper skin health.
How can you tell the difference?!
A good general rule is:
If your skin is flaky, it is dry and needs a moisturizer. If your skin is tight it is dehydrated and needs a hydrator.
